One of the perks of the Disney Visa cards is access to the Disney Rewards program. But what does this access get you, and is it really something you need to be a part of? Read on to find out.
What is the Disney Rewards Program?
The Disney Rewards program is a credit card points program available to holders of the Disney Rewards Visa Card (sometimes called the "Disney Visa Card") or the Disney Premier Visa Card. Individuals who use those cards for eligible purchases earn Disney Rewards Dollars on their purchases.
How Can I Earn Disney Rewards Dollars?
Individuals who have and use either of the two Disney Visa cards earn Disney Rewards Dollars on eligible purchases. Eligible purchases includes most ordinary things you'd think of as purchases, just not things like items you return or balance transfers.
Disney Rewards Visa cardholders earn 1 Disney Reward Dollar for every $100 they spend. Disney Premier Visa cardholders earn 1 Disney Reward Dollar for every $100 they spend on most things, but they earn 2 Disney Reward Dollars at "gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants and most Disney locations."
How Can I Use Disney Rewards Dollars?
Disney Rewards Dollars are issued in the form of a "Disney Rewards Redemption Card" that cardholders order via the Chase website. Disney is not fully transparent about exactly where the Rewards Dollars can be spent, but most Disney locations in the U.S., like the Disney Store and Disney parks, are included.
You can also use Disney Rewards Dollars to pay for a Disney vacation, and Disney recently introduced the option to use them to see certain movies at participating theaters. Finally, Disney Premier Visa cardholders can redeem their Disney Rewards Dollars toward airfare. In all these cases, 1 Disney Reward Dollar is worth $1.
Should I be Taking Advantage of Disney Rewards?
It depends. The Disney Rewards program is not the best part of the Disney Visa cards — if you're seriously considering getting one of these cards, you'll want to read about the Chase Disney Visa perks, first. If the perks don't convince you, we've written before that a standard 2% cash back card might be the best card for Disney travelers to use on a daily basis. Then again, if you're a Disney fanatic, the combination of the perks and rewards program could be a sweet spot for bringing a little more Disney magic into your life. Finally, we think the Citi Prestige perks are more impressive than even the Disney Visa perks for Disney travelers.
If you decide to get a Disney Visa card, you'll need to choose between the standard card and the premier, which is largely a question of math.
