Basics of Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe

Pecos Bill’s is a counter service restaurant at Magic Kingdom specializing in southwest / Tex-Mex food. Guests on a Walt Disney World Dining Plan will spend one quick service credit for an entree and a drink from the restaurant.

Pecos Bill’s is typically open from around 10:45AM until an hour before park close. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner and has an identical menu for both. Pecos Bill’s does not take Disney World Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs).

Pecos Bill’s is located at the far end of Frontierland, just past Country Bear Jamboree but before you get to Splash Mountain (now closed).

Pecos Bill’s main focus is Tex-Mex food, but it backs this up with a few burgers (which…I don’t know…are those Tex?). The restaurant offers beef, chicken, and pork served in different ways—tacos (available as variety sets—“taco trios”), fajitas, salads, nachos, rice bowls.

The fajita platter, featuring pork and chicken served with rice, vegetables, beans, and tortillas is the go-to item, but that’s really because…

The most popular “item” at Pecos Bill’s is probably the toppings bar. The toppings bar has unlimited lettuce, cheese, tomato, salsa, and sour cream. Unfortunately guacamole is no longer offered at the toppings bar. So if you were planning to visit Disney World for the free guac…sorry.

Now, let’s be real. It’s not cool to build your own “free” salad out of toppings bar items without buying anything at the restaurant.

But is it uncool to order fajitas, load them up with toppings, and split them as two people? Or just to add a little salsa to a bag of chips you brought from home? How much sour cream is “okay” for your beef nachos? Some of life’s great ethical debates will forever be unsettled, I guess.

Seating at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe

Most of the seating at Pecos Bill’s is inside, with a few tables being outside. Pecos Bill’s, along with the adjacent Tortuga Tavern has a seating capacity of 1107. I don’t know if this is actually the most seating in Magic Kingdom, but it definitely feels like it.

Our favorite room is “the dark room”—a large room in the back of the restaurant that seems designed to mimic nighttime outside a southwestern or possibly Mexican lodging (if you can explain the actual cultural inspiration for this room, please do).

While we’ve seen Pecos Bill’s short on seats, we’ve never had trouble finding a seat with it as our go-to restaurant for all manner of holidays and visits to the park.

With its location near the back Frontierland and Adventureland, it doesn’t see a huge amount of passerby traffic (relative to say, Casey’s, that is), which helps to prevent overcrowding. That said, the toppings bar, Tex-Mex offerings, and indoor seating continue to be popular. As it’s along the parade route, you can expect increased crowds immediately before and after the parade.

Theming

Pecos Bill’s isn’t quite as intricately themed as Casey’s or Columbia Harbour House, but there’s a decent amount of “story” here. Besides the architecture of the building, there’s a story throughout that Pecos Bill’s friends have sent him decorations for his inn and cafe.

It isn’t excessive, but you’ll see displays throughout the restaurant that capture the spirit of some of the Wild West’s legends, like this display for Annie Oakley:

Is this enough to make you rush to the restaurant? Probably not…but I could see some Wild West geeks getting a kick out of it.

Conclusions

There are three reasons to come to Pecos Bill’s—Tex-Mex food, the toppings bar, and indoor seating. Those are three simple, but pretty compelling reasons, I guess.

We’ve always been big fans of Pecos Bill’s because we’ve never had a problem placing a quick order and finding seating. The nice thing about Tex-Mex is that it’s mostly the same ten ingredients in different combinations. This allows a very efficient “variety.”

I don’t think there’s any single, standout item (like the hot dog of the month at Casey’s or the lobster roll at Harbour House), but Pecos Bill’s is a very solid what-you-see-is-what-you-get option.
