Journey Into Imagination With Figment Basics
Journey Into Imagination With Figment is a dark ride at Disney’s EPCOT in Walt Disney World. Journey Into Imagination With Figment:
does not offer rider switch
is a Tier 2 ride on Lightning Lane Multi Pass
does not have a single rider line
is about 6 minutes long
Measured by wait times, Journey into Imagination with Figment is the one of the least popular rides in Epcot. You should expect an average wait of about 0 to 20 minutes, but this will vary greatly by time of day and day of year.
If you’re visiting Epcot with small children, this will probably be a must-do as it stars a whimsical purple dragon. I’d add that kids prone to scares from loud surprises or dark rooms may have a frightful moment or two.
Where is Journey Into Imagination With Figment located?
Journey Into Imagination is located in the Imagination pavilion in the World Celebration land at EPCOT.
Ignore “World Celebration land”, that’s not helpful. Entering the park from the main entrance, there are three pavilions on the right side of the park. In order from the front, these are The Seas, The Land, and Imagination! So from the main entrance, head right, pass The Seas and The Land, and you’ll get to Imagination!
How to ride Journey Into Imagination With Figment
For this section we’re going to talk about all the Epcot Tier 2 rides (plus Soarin’) together, before talking specifically about the one in this post. The next few paragraphs are going to be similar in the posts for these other rides, too.
General Notes About Epcot’s Tier 2 Rides (And Soarin’)
The tier 2 rides at Epcot are:
Journey into Imagination with Figment
Living with the Land
Mission: SPACE
The Seas with Nemo & Friends
Spaceship Earth
Turtle Talk with Crush (show, not ride)
Disney and Pixar Short Film Festival (show, not ride)
When it comes to tier 2 Lightning Lanes—plus Soarin’, usually—at Epcot, there’s not much way to go wrong. We typically recommend Spaceship Earth and Mission: SPACE as your advance bookings, but the overall ride strategy will depend more on (1) what times you’re able to luck into when booking subsequent rides and (2) how low you want to keep your step count.
The Tier 2 rides are all in the front portion of the park. It’s a long 17-minute walk from Spaceship Earth (at the front of the park) to The American Adventure pavilion (in the middle of the World Showcase). Because the World Showcase is itself a loop, it really won’t make sense to be going back and forth between rides and the World Showcase. If you’re near one of these rides and the wait is 20 minutes or less, probably just ride it.
If you have Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you should be able to time a lot of these to ride in quick succession. You might wind up with a Lightning Lane for Living With the Land that’s 30 minutes away, but that just gives you time for a 20-minute wait for Journey Into Imagination, for example.
Riding Journey Into Imagination
Journey Into Imagination is close enough to the World Showcase that it’s not a total bummer to have to walk back here midday. That said, with waits rarely exceeding 20 minutes, it’s almost always just going to make sense to ride it around the time you ride Soarin’, Living With The Land, or The Seas With Nemo and Friends.
Otherwise, Mind the operating hours, as it often closes before the rest of the park.
They Really Did Figment Like That
Journey Into Imagination With Figment is a dark ride that takes you first through a few sensory experiences—focusing on smell, sight, and hearing, before diverting into a more…fun? creative?…experience. Throughout, the purple dragon Figment interferes with the experience.
Figment is a Disney icon, and for that reason alone it’s fair to call this ride a must-do (particularly given it’s usual short wait). Beyond that, we just don’t think this is a very good ride. The entire premise—Figment messes things up because imagination—it a little odd, and the execution feels hokey and underwhelming.
In some ways, it winds up being a ride for no one. Figment fans should be disappointed to see him get this treatment. Figment unawares should be overall bamboozled at what it is they just sat through.
As noted above, there’s one jumpy moment and one other potentially scary moment (involving the sound of an oncoming train in a dark room). If you don’t like bad smells, you may be put off in one scene.
Journey Into Imagination With Figment FAQ
Who is Figment?
Figment is a small purple dragon. In the original Journey Into Imagination, Figment was a companion of Dreamfinder—a figment of his imagination, actually.
In the current version of the ride, his character is mostly portrayed as a nuisance.
